During the holidays we had a EpicThanksgiving “Planksgiving Challenge” won by our wonderful client, Mary Saunders. So, it’s only natural to launch our 2020 Epic Client Spotlight with Mary. She tells us how she’s benefited from Pilates and shares a few “fun-facts” about herself.
Epic: When and how did you discover Pilates?
Mary: A little over 10 years ago, a new Pilates studio in McLean opened and I stopped in to see what Pilates was all about. I took a private lesson and then started taking reformer classes. While I had been a runner for many years and thought I was in good shape, my first Pilates efforts made in clear to me that I could use both more core strength and flexibility (particularly flexibility). I found that I really enjoyed reformer classes and was hooked.
E: What is the most notable change Pilates has made to your body?
M: My core strength and flexibility are both much improved. I am also much more aware of how my body works and where I am in space (proprioception – I love that word!).
E: What motivates you to maintain your Pilates routine?
M: I really like the precision of Pilates and look forward to my weekly class, both because of my terrific instructor, Kate, and my “classmates.” Pilates is a great addition to my weekly routine, which also includes yoga classes.
E: What is your preferred Pilates equipment?
M: I like the reformer and Cadillac the best. Can’t say I love the chair, but do think the chair exercises are excellent for both strength and balance.
E: What is your favorite exercise on any equipment? *
M: That’s a tough one – I do like teasers on the reformer (with box) and short spine too! I also like doing bar exercises on both reformer and Cadillac. What I really appreciate is the total body workout I get in each class.
